Carlton Edward Abbott Jr., Esq., age 66, of East Freetown, Massachusetts, passed away unexpectedly after a short illness on January 19, 2026. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts, Carlton devoted his life to public service, family, and community, leaving a legacy of leadership, integrity, and deep compassion.
Carlton shared a loving marriage of forty years with his wife, Arletta Abbott. He was a proud and devoted father to Rachel Abbott and her partner, Eric Gregoire, of Fall River; Lindsey Abbott and her fiancé, Christopher LaGrutta, of New Bedford; and Monique Abbott of Kissimmee, Florida. One of his greatest joys was being “Grandpa” to his beloved grandson, Landon Joerres. He is also survived by his siblings, Steven Abbott and his wife, Susan; Donald Abbott and his wife, Lisa; Patricia Costa; and Anita Abbott, as well as several nieces and nephews. Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Abbott and Carlton Abbott Sr.
Carlton’s professional life was defined by an illustrious career in law enforcement spanning more than 40 years, including nearly 25 years as Chief of Police for the Town of Freetown. He began his journey in 1979 as an auxiliary officer and steadily rose through the ranks, earning his appointment as Police Chief in 1998. Throughout his tenure, Chief Abbott guided the department through some of its most challenging periods, including economic recessions, budget crises, hurricanes, blizzards, floods, and a global pandemic. His steady leadership and thoughtful decision-making earned him deep respect from colleagues and the community alike.
Under Chief Abbott’s visionary leadership, the Freetown Police Department achieved significant advancements, including the implementation of a formal promotional process with written examinations and interviews, early adoption of TASERs as a less-lethal option, a cruiser leasing program, acquisition of modern equipment, and the integration of updated technology. He proudly led the department through police certification, accreditation, and re-accreditation by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, and oversaw the construction of a new police station to better serve and protect the community.
Chief Abbott’s influence extended far beyond Freetown. He was actively involved in the Bristol County Chiefs of Police Association and was a founding member and treasurer of the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC). He also served as president of the Southeastern Massachusetts Police Training Association (SEMPTA), playing a vital role in the training and development of hundreds of police officers. Additionally, he served on the executive board of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, helping to shape law enforcement policy across the Commonwealth.
A lifelong learner, Carlton graduated at the top of his police academy class in 1983. His academic achievements included an associate degree from Bristol Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Stonehill College, a master’s degree from Anna Maria College, and a Juris Doctorate from the Southern New England School of Law.
Outside of his career, Carlton cherished time with his family. He especially loved vacationing in Florida, creating memories with his wife and children, and doting on his grandson. Those who knew him will remember his dedication, wisdom, humor, and the unwavering love he had for his family and community.
